Winona house fire claims the life of one resident

A woman is dead after a fire broke out at a Winona home early this morning.

According to the Winona Fire Department, the fire started Sunday morning around 2:30 at 60 E. 10th Street.

When firefighters got to the scene, they say someone was still inside and after searching the home, they found a woman’s body.

FOX 47 spoke with one woman who lives nearby who heard and saw what happened.

"So at first we heard some breaking glass and some yelling. We didn’t know if it was a fight or what was going on. We looked out the window and saw flames coming out, then we saw trees on fire. We got out of the house, got our roommates out, just evacuated the place. When we got out there were already police cars here, so that was good. Then we just waited and watched," said Heather Buerman, who lives nearby.

The name of the victim has yet to be released and the cause of the fire is still under investigation at this time.

We will continue to provide more updates as they become available.
