Rochester Public Transit is turning to the sun to find a green way to put the next generation of buses on the road.
RPT is set to ask the U.S. Department of Transportation for nearly $6 million in grants to purchase four electric buses to fuel planned expansions in the city’s transit service. The grant proposal calls for rooftop solar panels at a new bus garage to offset the electricity demand of the electric buses.
The city’s energy commission meets Tuesday, looking to sign off on the proposal before it’s sent to Washington. The total cost of the project would be $7.4 million, according to city documents.
