40 Below hosts ‘Social Media Etiquette 101’

Rochester Area Builders 40 Below is a new group that helps young professionals in the area.

Tuesday night at the Civic Theatre Black Box, 40 Below hosted a Social Media Etiquette 101 panel. Founder of Inspire Sarah Oslund and web designer from Tulip Tree Studios James Fruth were chosen as panelists.

"We began talking about it at our executive board and everyone had something to chime in at every single age group and thought this is definitely something we need to bring up to our members," 40 Below vice chair Briana McDonald said. "Being a millennial myself, social media is really starting to not only be a large part of my personal life but also my professional life,"

But how do we separate those two lives? Or don’t we?

Let’s talk etiquette.

When using social media from a business stand point. Oslund urges social users to remember four guidelines: prioritize your resources, complete your profiles, be consistent and know your audience.

To brand a business online, all caps, exclamation points and hashtags should be used sparingly.

"You don’t need hashtag bad day, hashtag busy day, hashtag ate this for breakfast. Draw the line," Oslund said.

But, what if you want to keep work life far, far away from home life? Like that awkward moment when your boss friend requests you on Facebook?

"Push them where you want them to be," Fruth said. "You control your social media accounts."

In the end it’s up to you.

Whether you’re using social media for personal or professional reasons – or maybe even both at the same time, Fruth abides by one cardinal rule:

"Just imagine when you are posting on social media you are in the middle of a crowded store, crowded street. and by the way nobody else is talking," Fruth said. "You’re the only one talking."
