Rochester honors longtime employee with trail dedication

It’s been nearly a year since longtime Rochester Public Works Infrastructure Manager John Wellner passed away.

On Tuesday, the city gathered to remember him and his contributions, dedicating a trail on the east side of town to his name, which was one of his last trail projects before he passed.

The John Wellner Memorial Trail stretches from Century High School to RCTC and connects to other trails in Rochester, creating access for residents to get nearly anywhere by foot.

Tuesday’s ceremony meant a lot to his family and they say it felt like he was there with him today through the weather.

"Well his vengeance is it’s raining today, because he wouldn’t have wanted the recognition. He loved working for the city and the projects that he got to work on and he would never have wanted any credit at all, so this is a really nice way that they’re honoring him," said Kay Wellner, the wife of John Wellner.

In 18 years with the Public Works Department, John Wellner oversaw the design and construction of more than 85 miles of trail in Rochester.
