THE JEFFERSON AWARDS: Our August winners help children stay cozy with handmade quilts

Every month FOX 47 features someone in our community who is making a difference and we honor them with a Jefferson Award.

Our August winners use their talents to make children around the world and here in Rochester feel loved.

There’s a good chance that right now, somewhere, there’s a baby or child sleeping under a quilt made by Dorothy Bacon and Jean Streyle.

After all, over the last 12 years, they’ve helped make quilts for hundreds of children around the world.

"Our little fingers do a lot of little good things," said Streyle.

Their quilts have gone to children in Jamaica, Haiti, Iraq, and to people here in Rochester.

"We’ve given to the nursing homes, women’s shelter, crisis nursery, red cross," Streyle said.

Twice a month, Dorothy and Jean lead volunteers at Zumbro Lutheran Church to make quilts for not only these special projects, but also for every baby and adult baptized at the church.

This year, they also made quilts for every graduating high school senior from Zumbro Lutheran.

"We get thank you notes from the parents lots of times from the baptism quilts," said Bacon. "It’s a token they can remember that they belong to Zumbro and their child is baptized and these people thought enough to give them a quilt."

One of their regular volunteers, Beth Napton, nominated them for the Jefferson Award.

"Getting to know them on a personal level how selfless they are and what they’ve done and what they give to Zumbro with the amount of time they not only meeting two Thursdays a month but at home, the sewing they do at home and the preparing of all the fabric they do at home," she explained.

And though they say the quilts are simple, it’s easy to tell there’s a lot of love in every stitch.

"I feel good about that, that I’m being a good steward," Bacon said.

"It’s so much better to give than to receive," said Streyle.

All of the quilts are made from donated materials.
