ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) –  There’s something special about picking out the perfect gift for loved ones, and Wednesday night, dozens of local children got to experience that feeling.

The Rochester Salvation Army organized a shopping trip for 8 and 9-year-olds who come from families that qualify for Christmas assistance programs.

Each child was given a gift card, then paired up with a volunteer, who took them shopping for gifts to give to parents and siblings.

A bus took everyone to Shopko North to make their selections.

Program coordinators say it’s neat to see the children come out of their shell and get excited about shopping for others.

“They are pretty much jumping up and down when they’re here, wrapping up the presents and trying to make them look pretty, and they’re so excited,” said Cindy Norgard, Director of Social Services. “And their parents come to pick them up, they’re, ‘I got something that you’re just going to love and I can’t tell you what it is!’ So, it’s fun.”

After the children finished shopping, they came back to the Salvation Army to wrap the presents and enjoy some hot chocolate and Christmas cookies.
