Parking downtown in the Med City can be frustrating for some. But the Rochester-Olmsted Planning Department is trying to address this with new zoning districts.
The changes are meant to clear some of the traffic downtown by connecting outside suburbs to park and ride hubs.
The department also hopes that the new zones will result in more people living close to downtown in efforts to reduce commute time and the reliance on a personal vehicle.
The Transit Oriented Development District (TOD) will reportedly focus on mixed housing, employment and retail options.
The belief is that public investment will attract private investment.
“The park and rides that you’re discussing are kind of at the top of each of those corridors. As a way of saying “if you drive to this location, the bus will get you the rest of the way,” said Ryan Yetzer with the Olmsted County Planning Department. “And so the first step in that is getting more people around those areas, and that’s kind of what the goals of the zoning changes are.”
Anyone that wishes to learn more or voice a concern can attend another open house at 125 Live. Another meeting for the new zones will be held Thursday from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
The planning department is also set to meet at City Hall from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on December 18. Affected areas will include North and South Broadway as well as Slatterly Park.
