AAA urges users to charge electric cars frequently during cold temps

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) – While temperatures linger near and below zero, AAA is urging drivers with electric vehicles to charge their cars more frequently.

A new study shows that when temps reach below 20 degrees, the H-VAC system is used to heat the inside of the vehicle, causing the driving range to decrease by 41%.

That means that every 100 miles of combined urban and highway driving at 20 degree temperatures, the range would be reduced to 59 miles.

In order to avoid getting stranded with a dead battery, AAA says to be aware of this reduction and charge much more often.
