Church to serve as warming shelter until power returns in Hayfield

HAYFIELD, Minn. (FOX 47) –  Dodge County officials declared a state of emergency Thursday afternoon because of the extensive damage of this latest snowstorm. The city of Hayfield, which is in Dodge County, has been without power since 1 p.m. Thursday.

Hayfield has a population of about 1,300. At the peak of the Thursday’s storm, more than 4,340 homes in Dodge County didn’t have power due to damaged power poles and lines. Multiple roads were closed with barricades due to the downed power lines.

As of 6 p.m. Thursday, power was restored to nearly 900 homes, leaving officials with 3,472 homes still without power overnight.

Because of the outage, the city of Hayfield is asking residents to keep their water usage low until further notice. In the meantime, Trinity Lutheran Church has opened as a warming shelter for those who live in and around Hayfield.

The church and fire hall are the only two places in town that have a backup generator. Pastor Paul Hauschild expects to see between 20 and 30 people Thursday evening, and he said the church is ready for whoever might show up.

“When there’s need in the community, whether it be because of a fire, flooding, or electricity turned off, we’re a site where people can find help. We have running water, running toilets, ovens, refrigerator, freezer to bring some food and make some food.”

The church will stay open until power is restored.
