Rochester Dance Company dazzles in Sleeping Beauty Ballet production

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX47) – Students in the Rochester area were treated to a special exclusive performance Friday morning from the Rochester Dance Company.

More than 40 youth dancers along with 2 professional guest artists put on a condensed showing of the “Sleeping Beauty Ballet.”

The family production is not only a version of the well known fairy tale “Sleeping Beauty”, it also featured some surprise characters like Red Riding Hood, the Wolf”, Little Bo Peep and many glittering fairies.

Friday’s show was a 1-hour condensed version of the full ballet and was performed exclusively for Rochester students.

Dancers and Organizers alike say all the training and preparation was worth getting the chance to perform.

“Very rewarding. We take a lot of time on weekends. It’s usually all day rehearsals. Its always a ton of fun being a family in rehearsal and to see it on stage with the backdrop and lights, it is really rewarding and it’s so much fun.” Said Maddy Welch, a graduating senior from Mayo High School.

“So it’s so multi-dimensional. You’re strengthening your character as well as your body.” Said  former professional dancer and RDC artistic director Ted Sothern.

“I would say to anybody… don’t have a fear of that. Go into any dance class whether it be hip-hop, jazz, whatever and find the thing that moves you.”

Following the performance, the cast and crew answered questions from the audience and talked about the athleticism required to perform.

Saturday April 13th is the first time the public can catch the show. The full Sleeping Beauty Ballet will be performed at 2 p.m and 7 p.m. at the Mayo Civic Center.
