We finally saw temperatures return to the 50s today and outside of Thursday, it looks like we’re in for a much more consistent warming trend through the weekend! Along with warmer temperatures, we’ll also see periodic chances for rain showers and thunderstorms. For those looking for a little more snow to break the all-time season snowfall record for Rochester, keep an eye on Thursday but don’t get your hopes up!
Our first opportunity for rain showers this week returns for tonight as a weak storm system passes over the Upper Midwest. The best chance for rain may remain just south of I-90 with perhaps a few rumbles of thunder. These rain showers may linger through daybreak Tuesday before heading east by the midday and afternoon. Tuesday features partly sunny skies with high temperatures climbing back into the lower 60s.
A more significant storm system is expected to arrives Tuesday night and Wednesday with perhaps a couple rounds of thunderstorms for the area. A warm front is expected to touch off showers and thunderstorms late Tuesday night with another round of thunderstorms possible for Wednesday afternoon and evening. While widespread severe weather does not look likely for southern Minnesota, we will need to keep an eye out for hail with any thunderstorms that develop on Wednesday. High temperatures fall back into the mid to upper 50s for Wednesday.
Colder air briefly invades the area for Thursday as northwest winds pick up across Minnesota sending temperatures back into the upper 40s for highs. Rain showers are expected to pick up across the area for the midday and afternoon on Thursday and if moisture lingers into the evening I can’t rule out some snowflakes mixing in. Don’t hold your breath as far as seeing snow accumulations as the snow threat, if any, will be fleeting.
Temperatures promptly rebound for Friday and beyond with highs topping the mid 50s on Friday and the 60s for this Easter Weekend. While it looks like we should see a dry start to the weekend on Friday and Saturday, we may be contending with some showers or thunderstorms by Sunday. The timing of this rain is a bit to pin down at the moment for Sunday, but computer models have been favoring the afternoon and evening as far as the best time to see rain showers.
