Man charged with criminal vehicular homicide after a crash turns fatal

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) – A Rochester man been charged with criminal vehicular homicide following a weekend crash in Goodhue County.

Dustin Hicks, 34, told authorities he was both high and drunk when he was swerved to avoid a deer while driving around 1 a.m. Saturday morning.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Goodhue County District Court, Hicks said he and his passenger, 34-year-old Krista Koblitz, were returning from Treasure Island Casino where they had seen Snoop Dogg perform.

In the complaint, Hicks said he had smoked marijuana all day Friday, and had consumed a number of beers and other alcoholic drinks throughout the night.

A preliminary breath test at the scene revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.2.

Hicks stated that his jeep rolled several times, ejecting Koblitz who was not wearing a seat belt.

Deputies arrived to the crash scene on County 6 Blvd. near Red Wing. Koblitz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hicks is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, and each one carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence. He is due back in court on May 22.
