NEAR AUSTIN, Minn. (FOX47) – Kids are taking a break from the classroom to get out on the water today.

A free community canoeing event is also taking place Saturday at the Austin Mill Pond downtown. You can stop by the city pool parking lot from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The non-profit program is at the Cedar River, just north of Austin today. They’ve brought in six, ten-person canoes to get kids paddling.

Students from all public and private schools in Mower County are taking part in the fun in sessions throughout the week.

“What we do is we take people and try to connect them to the environment. No matter what your ability level is, no matter what your background is, we want to be the people who can do that for you.” Said Matthew Przeslicke of Wilderness Inquiries.

The program is set up each day on public land across the river from The Old Mill Restaurant on Austin’s north edge in coordination with staff from the Cedar River Watershed District-Mower Soil & Water Conservation District.

“We want to remind you of how therapeutic it can be to come out here and enjoy nature, even if it’s in your own backyard.” Said Przeslicke.

“You don’t have to go very far to relax and feel some of those therapeutic affects.”

Wilderness Inquiries is based out of Minneapolis and runs programs throughout the country.

“We send boats and crews out to California, New York…from anywhere in the southwest of the U.S. to the northeast. We try to get everyone covered,” said Przeslicke.
