WASHINGTON, D.C. (FOX 47) – Every month, FOX 47 features someone in our community who’s making a difference, and we honor them with a Jefferson Award.
And once a year, we choose one of those winners to represent Rochester at the national Jefferson Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
This year, we sent Rochester’s Teddy Collins, our winner from May 2018.
Teddy started the T&K Basketball league in memory of his brother, who was killed by a stray bullet at the age of ten.
The program invites young people to join the league at no cost.
The goal is to keep them away from gangs, drugs, and violence.
Tuesday morning, Collins gave a speech at the Jefferson Awards Foundation National Ceremony, where very local media partner across the country sends a representative.
“As of now I’ve had over 200 high schoolers and teenagers participate in the program. We’ve sent on eight kids to college who have played basketball,” Collins said in the speech.
And if you know someone who’s also making a difference, you can nominate them for a Jefferson Award here.
