Rochester fencing coach receives national honor

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) –  A fencing coach in Rochester is being recognized on a national level.

Corlis Hicks, a special education teacher and the Girls’ Fencing coach at Rochester STEM Academy was just named the USA Fencing 2019 National High School Coach of the Year.

She also coaches at the Rochester Youth Fencing program.

Hicks was recognized earlier this month at the National Championships in Columbus, Ohio.

In order to be considered for the distinction, her students had to first nominate her.

Hicks says the honor came as a surprise.

“I keep going back to overwhelming,” she said. “I don’t do this for me, I do this because I see this group of kids who’s got all this potential and they just need a focus and a step up, and that’s what this is about.”

According to USA Fencing, the Coach of the Year is chosen based on “leadership, motivation, and team development and improvement.”

While at the National Championships, two of Hicks’ fencers were also recognized for academic achievements.
