Get a drink, help students in need get school supplies

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) – School supplies were exchanged for drinks Wednesday night at LTS Brewing.

The event was part of United Way of Olmsted County’s Running Start for School campaign to gather supplies for children in need.

The campaign seeks to ensure that every child in need is prepared to succeed in school.

“School supplies may not be a top priority for some families, because they have a lot of other things going on, and other needs that they need to attend to,” said Impact Program Manager Grace Pesch. “So if we can just make this an easier process for them and take that burden off of those families who may have some burdens already, that’s wonderful.”

If you missed Wednesday night’s event, you can still help “Stuff the Bus.”

Simply drop off your donations at “the bus” and the United Way of Olmsted County will distribute them to students in need. Last year, more than 2,000 kids in Olmsted County received backpacks, notebooks, folders and other supplies. Volunteers are needed, too.

The school bus will be parked at Walmart North on Friday, July 19th from 4 – 8 p.m. It will be outside Walmart South on Saturday, July 20th from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. Many FOX 47 staff members will be helping out. We would love to see you there.

School supplies needed include:

  • Backpacks (Size large: 19″)
  • Glue sticks (washable, small)
  • 2-pocket folders (red, yellow, green, blue)
  • Markers (washable, 8-pack, thick, chisel-tip)
