Rochester community help transform alley ways into artwork

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) – Rochester community members got creative with colors, chalk and duct tape on Thursday.

Duct tape mural. During Thursdays Downtown, the Heart of the City team invited folks to decorate the alley next to the Chateau Theatre, in hopes of finding some inspiration for a future project. The team is hoping to repurpose the alley between 2nd Street and Center from a passageway, to a work of art.

To do that, community members came up with ideas for the alley way mural first hand. It’s all part to make the Med City more unique and inviting. Some of the ideas on display Thursday, could be used in the final product.

“Yeah some of these are really inspiring to leave, or to create for a permanent piece,” Coen Partners Project Manager Britton Jones said. “It’s been great so far seeing all the creative things that happen from 4-year-olds to 70-something-year-olds that have been out today.”

Jones says it’s important to have the community involved in deciding how Chalk mock up mural. Rochester looks.

“We want this project to feel like Rochester, we don’t want it to feel like somewhere else,” Jones said. “The more we can get the community of Rochester engaged and involved, giving their ideas on the design, the more it can be of the place and not just designers designing for design sake.”

Work on the mural alley is expected to begin in spring of 2020 and should be done by spring or summer of 2021. The project is part of Destination Medical Center’s vision.
