ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX47) — The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office is referring charges against 38-year-old Joshua Jacobson after he seriously injured a 3-year-old girl in a crash near Elgin Monday afternoon.
Jacobson, from Chatfield, is facing felony and gross misdemeanor counts of criminal vehicular operation, 3rd-degree DWI and driving after revocation. The Olmsted County Attorney’s Office will make the final decision of any formal charges against Jacobson.
Three-year-old Evelyn McKenzie of Elgin was sitting in the back of a 2010 Toyota Camry when it was struck by Jacobson’s vehicle before 4 p.m. on Monday. Her mother, 34-year-old Kathryn McKenzie, had been driving east on 85th Street NE and came up to the intersection at 70th Avenue NE before her vehicle was struck by Jacobson.
Evelyn reportedly stopped breathing after the crash, and did not have a pulse. A deputy, who has been identified as Tracey Pagel, performed CPR on her and was able to revive her. The Sheriff’s Office said Evelyn suffered serious internal injuries, and was airlifted by Mayo One to Mayo Clinic Saint Marys.
Deputies said Pagel is the community deputy for Rochester, Cascade Township and Haverhill Township. She has been on duty with the department for 12 years. Deputy Tom Olson also assisted in helping Pagel save Evelyn. Olson is a 11-year-veteran, who works as a Byron school resource deputy.
