Grateful family gives back to Ronald McDonald House

ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) —  We all know the impact the Ronald McDonald house has on families in the community – and across the country. The house that love built – has been serving them since 1974.

Jeanna Berge and her family stayed at the Ronald McDonald house in Rochester four years ago – for her little boy – who they now call “Miracle Miles.”

When Jeanna was 20 weeks pregnant doctors found a sport on her baby’s heart, which meant a stay at Mayo while doctors monitored the situation.

But, when the baby was born, he miraculously passed every test – thus, “Miracle Miles.”

Since the family’s stay, they have been returning with donations for the house. The first donation – just 40 gifts. This year, they needed a trailer to haul 564 gifts, $610 of cash and gift card donations, 50 newborn hats and 45 pounds of pop tabs.

While Jeanna and her family didn’t stay at the house long, they sympathized for families that have to spend time there during the holidays.

“We met so many families that have been here for years or longer,” Jeanna said. “We really wanted to make Christmas as cheerful as possible for the families that had to stay during Christmas away from other families.”

For the many families, the Ronald McDonald house is a home away from home. Rochester Ronald McDonald House Communications Director Jacob Dreyer says the generous donations will serve those families well.

“With a donation of this size its going to help a lot of families,” Dreyer said. “We’ll be able to use some of it right now to bless some of the families who are staying here. We’re a 70 person house now, so there’s a lot families that need a lot more love.”

Dreyer adds that some of the donations will also be added to the “snowflake room.” The “snowflake room” is a special room they have around the holiday season where parents can go and pick out gits for their kids. Dreyer says the house is always accepting donations, as well as volunteers.
