Navy veteran, local American Legion commander loses son in Red Wing house fire

RED WING, Minn. (FOX 47) — One man is dead after a fire broke out at a Red Wing home Sunday morning, making this the city’s first fire fatality in years.

The fire happened on the 1200 block of Phelps Street around 8:20 a.m.

Within minutes of arriving on scene, first responders found 25-year-old Ocean Christofferson on the first floor of the home and took him to Red Wing Mayo Hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“Sadly, today the City of Red Wing has encountered our first fatality fire in many years.  The loss of a life is tragic and we are saddened to lose one of our community members and neighbor,” said Shannon Draper, the Red Wing fire chief. “I am proud of the quick efforts of our firefighters and paramedics our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.”

A GoFundMe account has been created to help with funeral costs.

The State Fire Marshal along with the Red Wing Police Department is investigating the cause of death and fire.
