Man escapes custody after traffic stop

MASON CITY, Iowa (FOX 47) -- A man escaped a Cerro Gordo County Sheriff's Deputy in Mason City Friday night.

It happened at 8:50 p.m. in the 900 block of North Adams Avenue. The vehicle was stopped for an equipment check, when the deputy noticed a sawed off, pistol grip rifle in plain view next to the back seat passenger.

While the deputy was attending to the two passengers, the driver of the vehicle took off on foot. He was identified as 31-year-old Marcus Houston Jones. As Jones got out of the vehicle, a .45 caliber handgun dropped on the ground.

Jones was not caught - anyone with information is asked to call law enforcement. He has a warrant out for his arrest and should be considered armed.

One of the passengers, 35-year-old Carlos Levelle Cooper, was arrested and charged with carrying weapons, possession of a firearm as a convicted felon and 3rd offense possession of marijuana. Cooper is being held on bond at the Cerro Gordo County Jail.
