ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- It's a staple of the holiday season, kids building gingerbread houses, but at one Rochester school, there's a new twist.
Churchill Elementary School teacher Mara Danz had her class learn bits of the building and permitting process with the city of Rochester's Safety Department.
Friday they put that knowledge to use. The city approved their kindergarten version of building design and students were able to build their own gingerbread houses.
Danz says it added a new layer to education and having fun.
"Well we looked at the Rochester building permit and then filled out a kindergarten friendly version of it, sent it in and they came out today and approved our kindergarten building permit. So we got the okay to make gingerbread houses," explained Danz.
Kids in the class were also accompanied by family members to help them build the perfect gingerbread houses.
