ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Rochester International Airport made an announcement about the addition of a new air service.
Beginning Oct. 1, the airport will be adding nonstop flights to Denver, RST announced at a news conference on Monday afternoon.
"It's been a long goal of ours, as an airport, to seek out other hub destinations, especially as it relates to access for Mayo patients," said RST Executive Director John Reed.
"Many of the people that come through the Rochester airport are local people traveling for pleasure, but also patients coming to Mayo Clinic for their healthcare." said Rochester Mayo Kim Norton. "And we want that to continue and we want to make it as easy as possible for them."
According to RST, the flights will be through United. RST also said the daily flights will be scheduled to depart from RST at 11:15 a.m., and arrive in Denver at 12:30 p.m. The daily departure from Denver will be scheduled for 1:50 p.m., scheduled to arrive in Rochester at 4:50 p.m. The schedule may be subject to change, the airport added.
“We are thrilled United will be offering Denver as a new hub option,” Reed said in a news release. “Airlines and airports have measures in place to offer safe travel for those with essential travel needs at this time. This flight will provide critical access for inbound patient travelers now and for our local market as they return to travel when ready.”
By adding Denver, travelers now have one-stop access to 37 new cities from RST.
"Well, I think it opens up a world of opportunities for travelers to be able to head out west, which we've really not had that opportunity in the past," Norton said. "You were either going east or up to Minneapolis to catch a connecting flight."
"Well, it offers more flexibility, offers other points of service and just really makes it easier for our customers and people from our community," Reed said. He added it also allows business travel to come and go fairly effectively and easily.
RST said the daily United Express flights to Chicago will also resume on Oct. 1. All United Express flights in Rochester will reportedly be operated by SkyWest Airlines.
