ROCHESTER, Minn. (FOX47) — Geraldine Amstutz of Rochester has lived a rich life.
She was born in Grabill, Indiana. She married her husband Tillman Amstutz in 1943. They were married for 63 years. He was a pastor and moved around the country. They finally settled in Rochester with their four children in the 1980s.
Geraldine is an accomplished pianist, and has a famous sugar cookie recipe. She has four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She is also an artist and for decades, Geraldine has sent handmade cards to thousands of people. She makes the cards out of old cards, magazines and uses fun embellishments.
Her granddaughter Kari Amstutz said her grandmother is one of the most loving and compassionate people she knows. She said she makes the cards because she is rooted in her faith in God. She has had a lifelong mission to serve others.
“Everybody, everybody gets cards,” Kari said. “If she hears through church, if she hears through family members that we know somebody who’s ill, or needs encouragement, or has a new job. For goodness sakes, basically any occasion. Whether it’s to celebrate somebody, to encourage somebody, to lift their spirits, they get a card.”
Geraldine’s family now has a mission of their own. Her 100th birthday is March 15. The family is asking people to give a little of themselves and send cards so they can surprise her on her special day. Their goal is to get 500 cards to give to the woman who has taught them precious life lessons
about service, love and compassion.
“I know she will love all the cards,” Kari said. “Even if we could throw a giant party, I think she would love a big basket full of cards more, especially if they are homemade, so she can see everyone’s artistry.”
