Duluth K9 Luna killed, police involved in standoff with armed, dangerous suspect

DULUTH, Minn. (KBJR) — Duluth police officers continue to navigate a standoff situation Friday morning in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

According to a press release, Duluth police officers responded to a home in the 2300 Block of W 4th Street at 8:30 p.m. Thursday night on a physical domestic report.

When they arrived, officers learned the suspect had a felony and refused to surrender.

K9 Luna was then sent in to apprehend the suspect, at which point the suspect fired shots and hit Luna.

Officers returned fire, retreated from the residence, and set up a perimeter to contain the scene.

There’s no word on if the suspect is injured.

However, K9 Luna later died at the emergency veterinary clinic.

Luna is the second K9 partner Officer Haller has lost. His former partner, K9 Haas, was also killed in the line of duty just over two years ago.

No other officers were reported to be injured.

The suspect continues to be dangerous, armed, and uncooperative.

This incident is an active, ongoing, and dangerous situation, and the public is asked to stay away from the area.
