STEWARTVILLE, Minn. (FOX47) — An 18-month-old boy is in a medically-induced coma after he was found floating in a Stewartville pond on Wednesday afternoon.

The child is receiving critical care at Mayo Clinic Saint Marys hospital, according to the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies are hopeful his condition will improve.

This happened around 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday in the 700 block of Willow Green Court NE in Stewartville. Deputies received a 911 call that the child had fallen into a retention pond behind the residence.

The boy was in the water for up to five minutes, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

A family friend was watching the child outside. Deputies said the friend looked away “for a couple seconds” and then couldn’t find the boy.

She called his father, who arrived and found the child in the pond.

Deputies said multiple people performed CPR on the scene before emergency responders arrived.

Life-saving efforts were ongoing as ambulance crews took the boy to the hospital. Mayo One was called to the scene but did not airlift the child.

Thursday morning, relatives told law enforcement that the child is still in a medically-induced coma. The Sheriff’s Office said medical personnel planned to check on neural activity on Thursday.

Deputies said several of the child’s body functions are still working, like his liver and kidneys.

The investigation is ongoing.
