Breezy and cool today
Cool air is blowing into the region today in the wake of the storm system that brought beneficial rain to the area Wednesday night. We'll enjoy a fair amount of sunshine throughout the day with a brisk breeze that will become a bit gusty in the late morning hours and for much of the afternoon, adding a chill to the air. High temperatures this afternoon will be in the upper 50s to around 60 which is about five degrees cooler than the seasonal average and familiar territory for us in our current cool spell.
A weak disturbance aloft in the atmosphere will graze the area to the northeast as it moves down the Mississippi Valley this evening, sparking a few widely scattered rain showers. Expect brief, light showers after 8:00 PM until shortly after midnight with less than half an inch of rainfall expected. Skies will clear later in the night with low temperatures in the upper 30s and light winds.
High pressure will settle into the region from the northwest on Friday, bringing sunny, quiet weather to the area. High temperatures tomorrow afternoon will be in the upper 50s with a slight northerly breeze.
A mainly dry weekend
A large storm system will slide into the region from the northwest for the weekend, but at this point, it's still looking to only graze our local area to the southwest and that means only a portion of the area will deal with rain chances. We'll have cool sunshine through much of the day on Saturday before clouds thicken with the arrival of that storm system. High temperatures will be in the upper 50s with light east winds. Light rain showers will be possible southwest of Rochester, mainly around Mason City and Albert Lea, and for points to the southwest. Those locations will have brief light rain showers Saturday evening through midday Sunday when skies will begin to clear off again. We'll have sunshine through much of the day with brisk northeast winds and high temperatures will be in the upper 50s.
Slow warm-up next week
Cool sunshine will again be the rule for early next week as high pressure moves through the region. We'll have sunshine and high temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s from Monday through Wednesday. Warmer air will flow into the region for the end of the week and readings will then return to more seasonal levels in the upper 60s to lower 70s by next Friday and for the following weekend.
