Hot with isolated storms today
A large, incredibly warm air mass continues to dominate the entire midsection of the country today and that looks to be the case through the end of the workweek, so more 90-degree temperatures can be expected in the area. We'll have abundant sunshine throughout the day today with a chance for a few widely scattered, sparse showers and isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and early evening. High temperatures will be in the lower 90s with heat indices in the mid-90s. We'll again be on record watch today in Rochester as the record high temperature is 93 degrees, set in 2015 and we're expecting to be within a degree of that later in the day.
More heat, a few storms Thursday
The same weather pattern will stick around for Thursday, but with a little more instability aloft in the atmosphere, potentially setting the stage for a few stronger thunderstorms in the area for the afternoon hours. The Storm Prediction Center has placed a portion of our local area, including Rochester, in its lowest threat category for the afternoon and evening. A few of the very sparse storms in our area may produce large hail and gusty winds later in the afternoon and early in the evening. High temperatures tomorrow will be in the lower 90s with light south winds.
Friday cold front
Heat and humidity will continue to fuel thunderstorm chances in the area on Friday and it looks like we'll have the best chance for widespread rainfall in the afternoon and evening hours as a cold front pushes through the Up[er Mississippi Valley. A few of those late-day storms may become strong to severe weather downpours of rainfall possible as well. High temperatures will be in the lower 90s with a gusty south breeze.
Not as hot this weekend
High pressure from the Candian Plains will settle into the region for the weekend, bringing quieter, less humid weather to the area for the weekend. We'll have abundant sunshine throughout the day Saturday with high temperatures in the mid-80s.
We'll have sunshine and a few passing clouds Sunday with high temperatures in the mid to upper 80s.
Sunny, warm weather next week
A large area of high pressure will linger in the region throughout most of next week, providing our area with plenty of tranquil, sunny weather and seasonably warm temperatures. Expect afternoon high temperatures in the mid and upper 80s all week long with overnight lows in the mid to upper 60s. A few thunderstorms will be possible next Friday as a cold front pushes through the area from the Plains.
