Warm sunshine today
We're kicking off fall today with the feel of summer lingering across the area. Warm air is continuing to build into the region ahead of a slow-moving storm system and its cold front that are approaching from the west. We'll have mostly sunny skies throughout the day with a lighter south breeze than recent days, but temperatures will be even warmer. Look for high temperatures around 80 degrees which is more than ten degrees warmer than the seasonal average. (The equinox, incidentally, takes place at 8:30 AM central time.)
A breezy, warm Wednesday
Unseasonably warm air will linger in the area through the day Wednesday with a slightly more pronounced south breeze developing in the afternoon as a cold front approaches from the west. High temperatures will again be around 80 degrees with those south winds occasionally reaching 25 miles per hour while a few cirrus clouds begin to drift in late in the day ahead of the cold front's arrival.
Thursday morning showers
A few scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will be possible late Wednesday night and for the morning hours Thursday as the cold front moves through the area. Afternoon sunshine will help temperatures reach the mid-70s with a slight southwest breeze as the cold front moves through the area.
A warm start to the weekend
Another burst of warm air will move in for Friday under high pressure that will move in from the Plains. High temperatures will be in the lower 80s, perhaps the warmest temperatures of the week or the month! We'll have mostly sunny skies throughout the day with a moderate south breeze that will help the warming process.
Weekend cold front
Showers and a few thunderstorms will be possible on Saturday starting in the late morning hours and continuing through the afternoon and early evening as a more potent cold front works its way through the Upper Mississippi Valley. With occasional sunshine between those showers, we'll still manage some mild temperature readings in the lower 70s, but with a gusty southwest breeze.
Sunday looks drier and brighter with seasonably cool temperatrues reaching the upper 60s for afternoon highs and a slight northwest breeze.
Seasonably cool next week
At this point, it looks like cooler air will sink into the region from Canada for the bulk of the upcoming workweek before a spell of warmer weather potentially returns over the following weekend. Look for high temperatures in the upper 50s to mid-60s next week with a few showers possible early in the week.
